CLUB MEETING MAR

Ron brought in these two Sejo elms, which have the smallest leaves of any elm. He is air layering the large trunk on the left, which has a lot of young shoots. The plant on the right was air layered from the same plant last year.

 

Ron also brought in this Persian lace leaf lilac. This is a cluster style bonsai and each twig is a separate tree. He is wiring each to radiate straight out of the root ball.

 

Karen has brought this young black pine to work on.

 

George is helping Jeff with a JIN on his San Jose juniper. The JIN is used to reduce the height, and improve the taper of the tree. A smaller branch will be wired up to form a new apex.

 

 

 Jeff is removing the bark from the JIN.

 

Jeff has some fantastic Kingsford boxwoods. They are very hard to find, and extreamly slow growing. This one has a terrific roots. Jeff said he plans to cut off the botton half of the root ball.

 

Long brought in what he thought was a stone pine, but Kanemi said it is a blue cedar.

 

Kanemi is wiring Minh's black pine with Joe and Minh watching the master.

Rod brought this unusual juniper. Some of the new growth has yellow tips. Rod was not sure how he should style the tree. I think the consensus was wind swept. Most of the growth is to the left and back from the camera angle. Most of the branches could all be wired in that direction. George noted there was one branch that could not be moved and would have to be removed. 

CLUB MEETING FEB

George is helping style this formal upright juniper. This tree has a nice wide trunk. I think that is Gary hiding behind the tree.

 

 

Keith's juniper has nice taper. He has a stick bracing and stylizing the tree. I really like the tray he has selected for this tree.

Kanemi is pruning this tree for a Trilogy resident. I like the movement in the trunk.

 

Henry has brought this juniper in a nursery container. Large nursery containers are great for developing young trees.

 

I think this is an olive tree that Long is working on. It has quite a few radiating roots, which is always desirable.

 

Minh is working on a nursery container plant. I am not sure what it is, azalea?

CLUB MEETING SEP 8

We had a very small group at this month meeting, so we just met out on the patio of the craft room.

I was surprised when I saw the dragon fly sculpture in the first photo.

 

 

Gary brought in this maple which is growing over a rock. He was concerned that the base of the tree was not in contact with the rock. He can probably work the rock up into the root ball, when he repots it in the spring. 

 

This informal upright juniper  has a nice base and interesting movement in the trunk. Jeff's trees always look good.

 

I don't remember what kind of tree Jeff brought in but it may have been a cotoneaster. He had two broken branches which I helped him wire.  He covered the broken areas with tree sealer. 

 

Rosemary brought in this cotoneaster. It has some nice movement in the trunk. The lowest branch is very small and all the upper branches are quit heavy. I hope she brings it back, I would like to see what George or Kanemi would do with it.

 

Bob brought in a procumbens nana juniper cascade to work on. It looks really healthy. 

 

WHO MADE THIS, AND WHY DID THEY MAKE IT? I found this ball in the gutter in front of my house. It is almost a perfect sphere made of dry ornamental grass from my neighbors parkway. If you can solve this puzzle please let me know.
