CLUB MEETING OCT 11

I ran out of power on my camera, but of course I always carry a spare set of batteries. But guess what? The spares were not charged either. So I will show the only two images I have. If anyone has some photos they would like me to include in this posting e-mail them to me at pg_holt@charter.net.

Jeff brought in this forest which had some wonderful fall red and rust colors on the back right tree. I really liked the structure of the trunks and the fall colors of the moss.
I tediously edited the photo to remove the clutter. I think I may have to get a back drop for future photos.

John just getting started on pruning this juniper. He obviously has a more trimming to do.

CLUB MEETING SEP 13

Just a few pictures from our September meeting.

George is making some suggestions on bringing a branch down to improve the design of this informal upright Olive.

Kanemi is working with this new very young bonsai. I have no idea what the name of this plant is.

Phil is helping his son with this very nice juniper. It looks like a Procumbens Nana to me.

This is a magnificent California Juniper. I love the Shari which has just been painted with lime sulfpher to preserve the wood.

SANTA MARIA OBON FESTIVAL

Timing of my arrival at the Veterans Memorial Building was very lucky, as I walked up the sidewalk I could feel my body vibrate to the beat of drums. Their performance was quite a treat.

SANTA MARIA BONSAI CLUB DISPLAY
I selected five trees from our club's display to feature in this post.

Foemina Juniper (forest style)

Yatsabusa Pine (grafted to a Black Pine)

Blauwi Juniper (wonderful tapered trunk)

Montezuma Cypress

Yatsabusa Elm
-----------------------------------
BONSAI DEMONSTRATION
Kanemi has selected a boxwood for his demonstration. This is not the time of the year for serious root pruning, but the boxwood is more tolerant to root pruning in the summer.

The plant has been removed from the nursery can and pruning has started.

Pruning nearly complete.

Kanemi is now wrapping wire on the branches to allow him to move them and style the tree.

The styling is and root pruning complete and the boxwood can be planted in the bonsai tray.

Finished, BRAVO!

CLUB MEETING JULY 12

We had another good turn out this week. Brandon styled a juniper for his young cousin. It is good to see youngsters interested in the ancient art of Bonsai. Click on any of the photos to view larger images.

The Club will set up a Bonsai display for the Santa Maria Obon Festival Sunday July 19 from 12:00PM to 5:00PM. At the Veterans Memorial, 313 W Tunnel Street, Santa Maria.

I will post some Obon Festival photos next week.

SANTA MARIA TOWN CENTER BONSAI SHOW

Sunday April 25 the Santa Maria Bonsai Club had our annual Town Center Bonsai Show. These shows provide our club members with an opportunity to share their enthusiasm for the art of bonsai with the community. I believe the show was successful with relatively good attendance and much interest in the displays. There was some serious interests expressed in our club. The following photos are just a small sample of some of the trees on display.

****** BONSAI DEMONSTRATION ******
Our bonsai demonstration is always a big draw, and our father and son team did a terrific job. Kanemi and George are both bonsai instructors, and are past and present club presidents.
The tree selected for the demo is a San Jose juniper that had been trained as a vertical topiary with three balls of vegetation.

Kanemi is studying the tree to determine how he will style it.

George is explaining the process and fielding questions from the audience.
Here Kanemi forms new apex for tree. The top of the tree has been striped of bark and tapered to form a jin. This makes the tree appear more tapered and makes it look much older.

Here he has wired the major branches to allow the branch direction to be modified.

Now the roots get pruned. You should remove approximately the same percentage of the roots as the percentage of top growth you have removed.
Finally the tree is potted.
